Application

Lupranate® M20S is suitable for the production of rigid cellular polyurethanes by molding, spraying or frothing. It can be used for semi-rigid foam and flexible foam such as sound insulation, integral skin foam, high resilience flexible foam, packing foam, sealant and adhesive and binder.

Chemical nature

Lupranate® M20S is a solvent-free product, based on 4,4’-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), containing isomers and oligomers. The functionality is approximately 2.7.

Delivery

The delivery is by tankers and in non-returnable drum of 250kg capacity. If delivered in road tankers, temperature during transportation should be maintained between 15℃ and 35℃. If delivered in drums, extreme cold shocks and storing in direct sunlight should be avoided.

Storage

Lupranate® M20S must be protected from moisture. The ideal storage temperature is 15℃ to 35℃. Under these conditions and when moisture is excluded, the shelf life of Lupranate®M20S is 12 months. Drums must be kept airtight. Storage tanks should be blanketed with dry air or nitrogen.

Long storage leads to a lasting increase of viscosity depending on the temperature. In extreme cases a precipitate may form which will not be removed by heating.

If the product becomes cold, the viscosity will increase. This may lead to problems in processing. Storage for long periods below -5℃ can lead to partial crystallization.

Crystallized material should be melted out immediately by short term heating. Rolling of the drums in a hot air oven is the recommend method of dissolving the crystals. During heating, the overall temperature of the product must not exceed 70℃. Local overheating must be avoided, because the product will decompose at temperatures above 230°C with consequentgas formation. After melting, the contents of the drum must be thoroughly mixed.

Safety advice and environmental protection

Labelling, transportation, storage, processing, waste treatment and disposal must comply with national regulations. Occupational exposure limits are to be observed.

Lupranate® M20S is classified as harmful by inhalation. It is irritating to the eyes, respiratory system and skin. It may cause sensitization by inhalation and skin contact.

Before processing the product, we recommend reading the safety data sheet.

In order to avoid accidents, the residual product in the drums must be handled with care. Any water or moisture which is allowed to enter the drum will react with Lupranate® M20S and release carbon dioxide. Unless action is taken to prevent moisture entry or gas entrapment, the drums will become pressurized and could rupture.

If it is intended to use BASF isocyanate materials for the manufacture of consumer goods (e.g.products which will come into contact with foodstuffs or with the skin, toy, etc.) or medical products, national and international regulations have to be observed. We recommend contacting our Sales and our Ecology and Product Safety departments.

Disposal of Drums

Residue of isocyanate remaining in drums must be neutralized. For this purpose, we would recommend that the drums be filled, if possible outdoors, with water containing 0.1% of detergents. The drums should then be allowed to stand with the bunghole open for at least eight days, in which time the isocyanates will be converted to polyurea. This harmless product of the reaction is a solid and may adhere tenaciously to the bottom, lid and sides of the drums. After decontamination and cleaning, the drums may be reused, but under no circumstances for storing foodstuffs.
